Biography

Angela Campbell is an Associate Professor of Law and Director of the McGill Institute of Comparative Law. Together with Professor Lara Khoury, she is the Convener of the McGill Research Group on Health and Law. In addition, Professor Campbell is a member of McGill’s Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism and an associate member of the McGill Centre for Research on Children and Families.

Professor Campbell earned her B.A. (Hons), B.C.L. and LL.B. degrees from McGill University, pursuant to which she completed her LL.M. at Harvard Law School as a Frank Knox fellow and a Langdon H. Gammon fellow. Prior to joining the Faculty of Law at McGill, she clerked for The Honourable Mr. Justice Frank Iacobucci at the Supreme Court of Canada, and taught at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law (Common Law).

Professor Campbell researches and teaches in the areas of family law, health law, criminal law, wills and estates and children and the law. In 2011, she was awarded the John W. Durnford Teaching Excellence Award.

Professor Campbell’s recent research projects have examined law’s regulation of polygamous marriage and the intersection of such legal rules with the lived experiences of women in polygamy.

She is presently working on a study of how law conceptualizes and responds to women’s choices made in connection with socially and morally controversial lifestyles.

Her research as been funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Valorisation Recherche Québec, and La Fondation du Barreau du Quebec.
