Positions Available

Mechanical Engineering Post Doctoral/Research Associate
in Earth Mine Energy Research Group (EMERG),McGill and Qatar Universities

Background:
A position for a postdoctoral or research associate is available in the Earth Mine Energy Research Group (EMERG). EMERG at McGill University is to investigate and advance the sustainable development of alternative energies from both active and abandoned surface as well as underground mines and oil/gas wells The development of these alternate and sustainable energies will employ physical characteristics and properties of different type of mines and oil/gas wells such as thermal heat, potential energy, as well as its enclosure capacity. This project is a collaboration of Profs. Hassani, Mucciardi (McGill), Therrien (Laval), Al Khawaja (Qatar).

Description:
This is a multi disciplinary research project carried out in Qatar University in Qatar with close cooperation with McGill and Laval Universities in Canada. The project aims the Production of Heat and Electricity by exploiting geothermal heat of oil / gas wells and waste heat from refineries. The research is aimed to cover both the technical and the economic aspects of utilization of oil wells for heat and electric power generation. It is planned to create the engineering infrastructure required for future developments of geothermal and waste heat recovery heat facilities in oil industry. The study will include thermodynamic analysis of thermal cycles, hydro-geological assessments and experimental works. It is hoped that by undertaking this research the following goals can be achieved:

  • Facilitating sustainable energy extraction from active and abandoned oil fields
  • Lowering the cost of geothermal electricity generation to a considerable amount
  • Contribution to the environmental issues of abandoned oils wells
  • Drawing the applicability of geothermal power generation into the new domain of oil industry
Required skills:

The Postdoctoral fellow or the Research associate must have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and demonstrate a good knowledge of thermodynamics and energy conversion techniques. The researcher should be familiar with heat transfer and thermodynamics of thermal cycles, be hands on for experimental works and ready for in-site measurements.

Special requirements:
The researcher must be willing to reside in Qatar for the duration of the project. The travel cost of travel to Canada twice a year will be covered. The candidate must have a good command of English language. Familiarity with Arabic language is an asset. A very generous salary is offered.

Applying:
This appointment consists of a limited duration not to exceed three years. This appointment is also contingent upon the individual having a PhD or equivalent terminal degree by the start of this appointment. Interested applicants should contact Prof. Ferri Hassani.
