Hani Mitri joined the Department of Mining and Materials in 1986. He is the founder of McGill Mine Design & Numerical Modeling Laboratory. His research and teaching focus on rock mechanics and mine safety with applications to rockburst problems, fault-slip bursts, mining-induced seismicity, destress blasting, dynamic rock supports, ore dilution, mine backfill, and slope stability. During his career, he supervised more than 40 graduate students, and published more than 200 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He held several senior administrative positions in the department including two terms of Mining Program Director in 1997-2000 and 2006-2008, and Graduate Program Director (1999-2002).
