Academic profile

Hans Beck is John MacNaughton Professor and Director of Classical Studies in the Department of History and Classical Studies. Before immigrating to Canada, he held positions at Cologne University, Frankfurt University and the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC. He is the author and co-editor of eight books and many articles and book chapters. His fields of interest include: Greek government and federalism, Roman political culture, aristocratic rule in antiquity, and ancient historiography.

Current research projects include a study on Greek federalism (Cambridge UP), a 'Companion to Ancient Greek Government' (Blackwell Companions), and a co-edited volume on 'Wealth and Power in the Roman Republic'. At McGill, he is the PI of a SSHRC-sponsored research program on 'Ancient World Elites' (AWE) which investigates the implicit assumptions of elite power from a cross-cultural perspective (Greece, Rome, China). He also collaborates with the Clusters of Excellence at Frankfurt University ('Normative Orders') and Münster University ('Religion and Politics').
