Academic profile

Hans Beck is Professor of Ancient History, John MacNaughton Chair of Classics, and Director of Classical Studies in the Department of History and Classical Studies. Before immigrating to Canada, he held positions at Cologne University, Frankfurt University and the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC. He is the author, editor, and co-editor of nine books and many articles and book chapters. His fields of interest include: Greek government and federalism, Roman political culture, aristocratic rule in antiquity, and ancient historiography.

Current research projects include a study on Greek federalism (Cambridge UP) and a co-edited volume on 'Wealth and Power in the Roman Republic'. At McGill, he is the PI of a SSHRC-sponsored research project on 'Greek Federal States' which partners with the Cluster of Excellence 'Religion and Politics' at Münster University in Germany.
