Research Interests

My research examines white individuals’ racial attitudes. My colleagues and I developed the Psychosocial Costs of Racism to Whites Scale to operationalize theoretical work about the ways in which dominant group members experience costs as a result of participating in white supremacy. Furthermore, we identified five distinct types of white university students that reflected various levels of white empathy, white guilt, and irrational white fear of people of color. Most recently, we have applied this work on costs of racism to white helping professionals and educators with the ultimate goal of enhancing cultural competence.

My research also has focused broadly on understanding diversity-related attitudes of students from all racial backgrounds, and how participation in diversity experiences during college may influence such attitudes. At present, my students and I are conducting a qualitative investigation to understand racialized students' experiences with racial microaggressions at McGill.
